I am reading our former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson's marvelous memoir, the Heart matters. Here from her chapter on Paris, her years there after university:" the big barrier to my being able to really burst into the home stretch in French was the pronunciation of r. Our professors asserted that no English person could ever do the proper r, which was pronounced from the back of the palate and not from the front, like the Italian and the Spanish. In fact, one instructor told us that all native English speakers seemed to have eggshells for lips, as though they were frightened of breaking them. He demonstrated, with an alarming explosion of his epiglottal appartus, the way in which French differed from our swallowed consonants. I despaired about this and used to walk around reading aloud signs with r in them, like restaurant and cordonnier. then one day near the Louvre, I looked up and saw the rue du Louvre sign and suddenly as I sasid rue out loud I realized that I had mastered the r."
